Not Every Gap Needs a Specialist
Subject specialists IB examiners, experienced IB teachers, tutors with deep expertise in one subject cost more for a reason: they bring mark-scheme-level insight that a generalist simply doesn't have. But that insight isn't always what's needed. A lot of tutoring spends goes toward specialist rates for problems a strong all-round tutor could have solved for less. Knowing which is which before you book is the difference between money well spent and money wasted.
When a Subject Specialist Is Worth It
For Higher Level (HL) sciences and mathematics, working with a subject-matter specialist is essential, as general knowledge is insufficient to navigate the multi-step problems and strict mark allocation unique to these courses. Specialized expertise is equally vital when evaluating Internal Assessments (IAs) and Extended Essays (EEs), where reviewing research questions, methodologies, and drafts against IB criteria requires someone who has marked or reviewed numerous submissions in that exact subject. Furthermore, when a student is stuck on precise, subject-specific techniques such as command-term misreading, recurring calculation errors, or specific stubborn topics, a specialist can diagnose and resolve the issue far faster than a generalist, offering greater efficiency despite a higher hourly fee. Ultimately, specialists stay fully aligned with periodic syllabus updates, ensuring that instruction reflects the absolute latest guide changes and mark-scheme nuances that general tutors might overlook.
The cost is real: specialist rates run from roughly $70/hr. for an experienced IB teacher up to $235/hr. for an examiner or senior specialist, well above the $15 to 70/hr. generalist range. That premium is worth paying when the problem is genuinely subject-specific and precise not as a default for every tutoring need.
When a Strong Generalist Is Enough
- Study skills and workload coaching. Time management across six subjects, IA/EE/CAS balancing, and general organization don't require subject expertise, they require someone who's been through the DP successfully and can coach the process.
- MYP-level support. Younger students working through the Middle Years Programme generally need broader academic support and study-habit building rather than DP-examiner-level subject depth.
- EE and CAS logistics. Helping a student choose an EE topic, structure their CAS reflections, or navigate deadlines is largely process guidance, not subject mastery, most strong IB graduates can help here regardless of their own subject strengths.
- General confidence and exam-readiness coaching. If the issue is more about exam nerves, pacing, or general study confidence than any specific content gap, a relatable generalist often a recent graduate can be just as effective as a specialist, at a fraction of the cost.
Generalist tutors, often recent IB graduates who scored well across the board, are well suited to this kind of support and typically charge $15 to 40/hr. as students or early-career tutors, up to around $70/hr. for more experienced generalists.

How to Tell Which You Actually Need
The clearest signal is how specific the problem is. A named topic, a recurring error pattern in past papers, or a stalled IA in one subject all point to a specialist. A general sense of being behind, disorganized, or under-confident across multiple subjects points to a generalist and paying specialist rates won't fix a problem that isn't actually about subject content.
If you're not sure which camp your situation falls into, a mock exam or practice-question platform that breaks results down by topic can settle it before you spend: a narrow, specific gap in the data points to a specialist; a broad, even spread of lost marks across many topics usually points to something a generalist or a study-skills reset can address just as well.
