The False Choice
Most advice about IB support frames the decision as a binary: struggle through alone, or hire a tutor. That framing misses the option that's grown fastest in the last few years, platforms that use mock exam and practice-question data to show exactly where a student is losing marks, without live teaching. It isn't a replacement for self-study or tutoring. It's the layer that tells you which of the other two you actually need, and where to point it.
Self-Study: The Right Starting Point for Most Students
Self-study should usually come first, not last. Mock exams and practice questions tagged against real IB assessment criteria turn a vague sense of weakness into a specific, actionable list.
- Works well when: you need to know precisely where a gap is before deciding whether it's worth tutoring, or before a tutoring session so the hour is spent efficiently rather than reviewing material that's already strong.
- Falls short when: the issue isn't a knowledge gap at all it's a stuck IA, a need for live explanation of a genuinely new concept, or an exam-anxiety issue that data alone won't resolve.
