IB Subject Choice Guide: How to Pick Your DP Subjects

Choosing IB subjects feels like a bigger decision than it should have to be, mostly because it's made early, under time pressure, and with incomplete information about what university programs will actually require years later. There's no single right combination but there is a better and worse way to approach the decision.
Here's a practical framework for choosing subjects, rather than a list of "best" subjects that ignores your actual goals and strengths.
Start With the Six Group Requirement:
Every DP student needs one subject from each of the six subject groups Language & Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals & Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts or a substitute. This structure limits how much flexibility you actually have, the real decision is usually which specific subject within each group, and which three or four go to Higher Level.
Three Questions to Actually Base the Decision On:
- What does your intended field require? If you have a reasonably clear direction like engineering, medicine, law, business, check actual university program requirements for specific subjects and levels, this narrows the decision fast.
- Where are you genuinely strongest, not just interested? HL subjects demand sustained depth over two years, a subject you enjoy but consistently struggle with can drag down your total score more than a less exciting subject you handle comfortably.
- How much breadth do you want to keep? If you're genuinely undecided on a direction, a more balanced subject spread keeps more doors open than early over-specialization, at some cost to depth in any one area.

- Choosing HL subjects based on what's "impressive" rather than what you can sustain: A high HL count in subjects you're not equipped for tends to hurt your total score more than it helps your application.
- Ignoring the AA vs. AI Math decision: Math: Analysis & Approaches and Math: Applications & Interpretation lead to different subject strengths, check which one specific program actually expect before choosing.
- Deciding without checking real program requirements: "I think I need HL Physics for engineering" is a guess; checking three or four actual target programs' published requirements replaces the guess with a fact.

Subject choice sets the stage, but consistent, realistic practice is what actually moves your grades once you're in the subjects you've chosen. A free mock exam is a useful way to check early whether a subject and level combination is actually the right fit before you're too far in to easily switch.
