IB Score Calculator: How to Calculate Your Total IB Score

The IB Diploma is scored out of 45 points: up to 7 points from each of your six subjects (42 points total), plus up to 3 additional points from the combined performance of Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE). “IB score calculator” and “IB grade calculator” both usually mean the same thing working out that total, either to check a real result or to estimate where predicted or mock grades currently land.

The Basic Formula

• Add together your 1 to 7 grade from each of your six subjects maximum 42 points
• Add your TOK/EE bonus points, from 0 to 3, based on the combined grade matrix
• Total = subject points + core points, out of a maximum of 45

The TOK/EE Points Matrix

TOK and the Extended Essay are each graded A through E. Those two letter grades are combined on an official matrix to determine how many bonus points (0 to 3) get added to your total. Broadly speaking:

• Two strong grades (for example, A and A, or A and B) typically add close to the maximum 3 points
• Mixed or moderate grades typically add 1 to 2 points
• A very low grade in either TOK or the EE can result in 0 points, and in some combinations, can prevent the diploma from being awarded at all, regardless of subject scores

Because the exact matrix values are set by the IBO and can be revised, always check the current official grade matrix through your school or IBO documentation rather than relying on a fixed number, the general pattern above holds, but the precise point values shouldn't be assumed.

Worked Example

A student earning 6, 6, 5, 6, 5 and 6 across their six subjects has 34 subject points. If their TOK and EE grades combine for 2 bonus points on the matrix, their total IB score would be 36 out of 45.

What Counts as a Passing Score

• A minimum total of 24 points is generally required to be awarded the diploma
• Several additional conditions must also be met for example, minimum grades in individual subjects, no grade of 1 in any subject, and passing CAS, so hitting 24 points alone doesn't automatically guarantee the diploma
• The maximum possible score is 45 points
